11 Things To Do On Sullivan’s Island

11 is my favorite number…so here’s the list of 11 things to do on Sullivan’s Island. (Extra points if you get these all knocked out in a week!)

1. Grab a Gamechanger and Nachos at Home Team BBQ

The nachos are just so good at Home Team. We recommend getting them with either pulled pork or brisket. It’s a meal for 2 or the perfect appetizer for a group. Wash it down with Home Team’s popular Gamechanger. They may ask you if you want a ‘floater’ (ie extra alcohol). We’d recommend against it - they’re strong enough as is.

2. Walk Down Officer’s Row

From the corner of Ion & Station 18 to the corner of Ion & Station 17. These stately homes in this ‘neighborhood’ were built at the turn of the 20th century to house military officers during World War I and World War II.

3. Take a morning stroll on the beach

Nothing is more peaceful than a morning beach stroll…especially on Sullivan’s Island. Grab your coffee from Brown Fox and head to the beach for the fresh air and beautiful views.

4. Visit Fort Moultrie

Fort Moultrie was a series of fortifications established to protect Charleston during the American Revolution. It’s located just off of Middle Street between (approximately Stations 12 and 13).

5. Check out the UFO House

Located at Station 28 1/2, this unique oceanfront home definitely stands out from the traditional, Southern architecture on Sullivan’s. Learn more here.

Note: This is someone’s home, so please be courteous.

6. Get the Fish Tacos at Poe’s Tavern

We love the mahi tacos and the buffalo shrimp tacos the best. Insider tip: you can mix and match!

7. Grab a treat at Beardcats

Offering up homemade gelato and other sweet treats, Beardcats is a charming little ‘sweet shop’ located on Middle Street…just below the Obstinate Daughter. Offering a rotating list of gelatos, our family loves their gelato sandwiches.

8. Go paddle boarding or kayaking at the ‘Put in’

Tucked away at Station 26 (on the intracoastal side), the ‘Put in’ is the spot where locals jump on their paddle boards and kayaks. There’s spots for a handful of cars. You can rent a board or kayak from Sealand Sports on Middle Street.

9. Watch the Kiteboarders at Station 28 1/2

This is one of the best spots on the east coast for kiteboarding. It’s usually more popular in the mid to late afternoon on windy days.

10. Go Ghost Crabbing at Night

Grab a flashlight, a small net and a bucket (get them from the CVS on Ben Sawyer if you don’t have them). Then head out to the beach after sundown - between May and September is the best time of the year. Then start hunting for ghost crabs with your flashlight. The crabs will either freeze and you can catch them easily…or they’ll try to scamper away and make you chase them. We recommend around Station 18 1/2 - there’s parking and it’s cool to have the lighthouse in the background.

Note: we highly recommend catching and releasing!

11. Grab a Frose at The Co-Op

Ice cold drinks are perfect for hot summer days. The Co-Op on Sullivan’s and IOP offers a variety of flavors for their signature slushy ‘Frose’ drink. They are sweet and they go down easy!
