Sullivan’s Island
The laid back vibe on Sullivan’s can’t be beat.
About Sullivan’s Island.
Just over the Ben Sawyer Bridge, Sullivan’s Island sits as our favorite spot and the closest beach to Sullivan’s Nest. Just 2.5 miles long, Sullivan’s brings a mix of wide beaches, beautiful homes, some interesting history and great restaurants.
The waves typically aren’t big on Sullivan’s Island, so if you’re looking to surf and boogie board, there are some better spots around Charleston. However, if you are looking for a big beach, low-key waves, tidal pools, natural beauty, and a relatively quiet spot, this is the place.
Tips.
The beach on Sullivan’s is a little less busy than other Charleston area beaches...but please know that they are strict with their rules on the Island.
Here’s a few tips to make sure you stay out of trouble :)
As with all beaches in South Carolina, alcohol is prohibited on Sullivan’s Island beach. However, the big difference between Sullivan’s and most other beaches is that the rule is actually enforced here. It’s not uncommon to see fellow beach goers get tickets for violating this rule. The fine is $1040, so it’s definitely not a drop in the bucket. Drink on the beach at your own risk :)
No styrofoam coolers or styrofoam cups on the beach.
If you do drive your car over to Sullivan’s Island, there is off street parking available. However, pay attention to where you can and can’t park - it is very clearly marked.
In addition, when you park ‘off street’ you need to be sure that all of your wheels are completely off the pavement. You’ll see ‘No Wheels on Pavement’ signs throughout the island to remind you. If you do park with your wheels still on the pavement, you’re very likely to get a ticket as this is monitored closely by the Sullivan’s Island Police Department.
SI Stations.
There are ‘Stations’ all along Sullivan’s Island, which are essentially beach access points. Most of the stations give direct access to the beach.
Here’s a quick guide for you:
The best beach spots (in our opinion) are between Station 16 and Station 28½.
The Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse is at 18½.
The easiest access to restaurants (if you want to walk up for lunch) are Stations 21, 22, and 22½. These are also, typically, the most popular spots and parking may be a bit harder to find around here during the busy season.
Most of the walks to the beach are a combination of natural paths and boardwalks. The walkways to the beach are beautiful as you’ll meander by local vegetation, wildflowers, and cool beach houses. However, most of the walks are between 600-1000 feet. So, be prepared for a few minute stroll...especially if you are loaded up with beach gear.
If it has rained a lot recently, some of the walkways may be under water - it’s called the Lowcountry for a reason! So, if you see large puddles of water around the island as you’re looking for parking, I’d recommend trying to get to the beach at these Stations: 18½, 19, 21, 22, 22½, 25, and 26. These stations have more elevated paths and walkways.
Station 28½ is one of THE spots on the East Coast for kiteboarding.
The Drive.
You’re in a really good location and only about 1.5 miles to Sullivan’s Island. However, Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms are popular beaches. During the busy season (summer!), traffic can get pretty hectic driving over the Ben Sawyer Bridge to get to Sullivan’s and IOP. During busy times, traffic may start backing up during the late morning and it could take 15 minutes to get over the bridge and onto Middle Street on Sullivan’s. If you want to avoid traffic and have parking options, load your gear up on the earlier end and head over before 10:30 am (ish) - especially on the weekends. The Co-Op has breakfast, so you can grab some food there to fuel you for a fun day on the beach. And, really, what’s better than the beach in the morning?!
