Folly Beach
An awesome little surf town that’s a whole lot of fun.
About Folly Beach.
Folly Beach is an energetic beach town with a fun, surfer’s vibe. It’s a bit of a drive and will take you about 40 minutes to get there. However, it’s an easy drive and is definitely worth it if you are heading to Folly for the day.
Folly, called by locals as the ‘Edge of America’, is packed with bars, restaurants, and surf shops. During most of the year, you’ll see beachgoers walking the streets, driving golf carts, and enjoying the funky vibe of this cool, little beach town.
The Folly Pier is located as one of the centerpieces of Folly and stretches 1000 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. Around the pier, the beach can get packed as it’s just a few blocks away from all of the restaurants and bars.
Tips & Insight.
Parking can be a little tricky on Folly if you want to stay close to the Folly Pier. There are pay lots and you should probably just bite the bullet and pay for parking. But there are off street parking options available in and around the island.
If you are looking to spend a beach day at Folly, we’d recommend one of 2 options:
Pick out a spot a few blocks away from the pier. During the high season, it’ll be crowded and a bit of a party scene. But there’s great energy and you’re just a short walk from tons of bars and restaurants. So, it’s easy to zip back and forth from a bar and the beach.
If you’re looking for a surf spot, head to ‘The Washout.’ (You can google it for directions.) This is a more secluded area and won’t be quite as busy. However, this is a popular surf spot and offers some of the best surfing in the Charleston area. It’s a few miles from the pier and you can park off-street pretty easily….especially if you get there early.
